唔駛太早比小朋友睇 "your baby can read" 呢D學習DVD/ Flash card

幾時比BB睇Your Bady Can Read (學習DVD) ?

原來 "Your Baby Can Read" 已經停左產....

You bady can Read or can they ??
investigative news story by NBC correspondent Jeff Rossen.)

..just a memorization will cause damge

Support

http://blogs.babycenter.com/mom_stories/my-baby-can-read/  ??

If you live in the United States, you may have seen the advertisements on TV. “My baby can read” is a program that uses flashcards and DVDs. The program drills babies to identify a variety of words—including tricky words like “elephant.”
Are these babies really learning to read? Today show correspondent Jeff Rossen asked a bevy of reading experts from universities like Harvard and Tufts. The experts’ answers were unanimous. Babies subjected to this memorization program aren’t learning to read. They are learning to recognize the images of words on the flashcards.
Needless to say, language researchers have already noticed that babies can recognize distinctive bits of text. Little kids are good at recognizing the logos and labels of their favorite products. Riding in a car on the freeway, they can “read” the signs of their favorite restaurants.
This sort of thing isn’t irrelevant to reading. Some researchers suggest that it helps toddlers and preschoolers understand that text symbolizes or “stands for” things and ideas in the world.
But does it actually benefit a baby if you purposely teach her to recognize these words? And what about negative effects? Could this program harm babies? There doesn’t seem to be any research that addresses these specific questions.
The advertisements claim that the babies will have a head start when they begin reading in school. They even allude to a special “window of opportunity” for teaching babies in this way—as if there is a sensitive period for memorizing the images of text.
But these are speculations. As the experts interviewed by Rossen note, there haven’t been any studies showing that babies drilled to memorize words are any better off.
And that “window of opportunity?” The “My Baby Can Read” website seems to support this claim with the statement “The most important time to start teaching any language, including reading, is before the age of 3 years.”
That’s a peculiar claim. Yes, kids can benefit from early exposure to a second language. As I noted last week, babies raised in bilingual homes might have an easier time with phonics when they eventually learn to read in school. But that doesn’t tell us that the first 3 years is “the most important time” to teach a baby to memorize words.
As for the negative effects, Rossen points out that making babies watch lots of DVDs could result in too much screen time. When babies watch too much TV, they tend to miss out on the human interaction and conversation that helps them learn to talk.
But what really concerns me are the long-term emotional effects.
Parents who try to drill and coach their babies may get frustrated. They may lose their patience. If their frustration gets communicated to the baby (and it’s hard to imagine how it wouldn’t) the baby may feel pressured or distressed. The parent-child relationship will suffer, and for what?
I worry about the effects of pushing an academic agenda on preschoolers, let alone babies. Around the world, societies have tended to agree. Kids don’t get formal instruction until they are between 5 and 7 years old. That timing matches what we know about the development of “executive control,” the ability to plan ahead, think abstractly, and restrain one’s inappropriate impulses.
We can try turning preschools into serious academic class rooms. Some kids—the ones who are unusually focused and self-controlled for their age—might adapt and even thrive. But for many kids, rote learning and formal instruction might require a level of maturity that they just don’t have. Not yet.
What happens if parents mistakenly believe that their babies are ready for an academic agenda? We might discover that young children are learning an unwanted lesson—that school is unpleasant.

  1. 我覺得your baby can read 的書同flash cards 都幾好,因為是真實物件。
